RRB JE Salary Per Month 2026: In-Hand Pay, DA, HRA, TA and City-Wise Tables

Ask ten aspirants what an RRB Junior Engineer earns and you will hear ten different numbers. Some quote the basic pay, some add allowances, and a few mention a figure that looks suspiciously like a coaching ad. The truth is simpler once you know how a railway pay slip is put together.

In this guide, we break the RRB JE salary per month into its parts, work out the numbers for every city class, and show how pay grows over the first twelve years. Every figure below is calculated, not guessed, using the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix and the current DA rate.

RRB JE Pay Level and Starting Basic Pay

A Junior Engineer in the Railways is placed at Level 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix. The starting cell is ₹35,400, and every other component on the pay slip is built on top of that one number.

Level 6 moves ahead by roughly one cell a year. The first twelve cells look like this: ₹35,400, ₹36,500, ₹37,600, ₹38,700, ₹39,900, ₹41,100, ₹42,300, ₹43,600, ₹44,900, ₹46,200, ₹47,600 and ₹49,000.

The Formulas Behind Your Monthly Pay

Your monthly pay is gross salary minus deductions:

  • Gross salary = Basic Pay + Dearness Allowance (DA) + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + Transport Allowance (TA)
  • Net (in-hand) salary = Gross salary − Deductions

Here is how each part works.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

DA is a percentage of basic pay that protects your income from inflation. After the April 2026 Cabinet decision, the rate is 60%, applied from 1 January 2026 (it was 58% before). So for a basic of ₹35,400, DA is ₹21,240.

A newer revision is due from July 2026. At the time of writing, I could not find an official announcement, so the tables use 60%. If you see a higher rate on your pay slip, use our DA sensitivity table later in this guide.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

HRA depends on the class of the city you are posted in, and it is calculated on basic pay only. Because DA has crossed 50%, the revised rates apply:

rrb je salary per month
City classHRA rateMinimum HRAExamples
X30% of basic₹5,400Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru
Y20% of basic₹3,600Mid-sized cities (5 to 50 lakh population)
Z10% of basic₹1,800Smaller towns (under 5 lakh)

At Level 6 entry pay, the percentage always beats the minimum, so the minimum does not come into play.

Transport Allowance (TPTA)

For Levels 3 to 8, transport allowance is ₹3,600 a month in the higher-rate TPTA cities and ₹1,800 a month everywhere else. DA is paid on top, so at a 60% rate you actually get ₹5,760 or ₹2,880.

One thing trips people up: the list of higher-rate TPTA cities is separate from the X, Y and Z list used for HRA. A city can be class Y for HRA and still be a higher-rate TPTA city, such as Lucknow or Patna. That is why the tables below show both Y cases.

Deductions

Three items usually reduce your gross pay:

  • NPS or UPS contribution: 10% of (basic pay + DA)
  • Health scheme contribution: ₹450 a month is the CGHS rate for Level 6. I have used it as a sample figure, since railway staff are often covered by their own health arrangements and group insurance, so your slip may show something different.
  • Income tax: For these salary levels, it works out to nil under the new regime (see the tax note below).

RRB JE Salary Per Month: Entry-Level Table

Here is what a fresh JE at ₹35,400 basic takes home in each type of posting, with DA at 60%.

ComponentX city (higher TPTA)Y city (higher TPTA)Y city (other)Z city (other)
Basic pay₹35,400₹35,400₹35,400₹35,400
DA (60%)₹21,240₹21,240₹21,240₹21,240
HRA₹10,620₹7,080₹7,080₹3,540
Transport allowance (with DA)₹5,760₹5,760₹2,880₹2,880
Gross salary₹73,020₹69,480₹66,600₹63,060
NPS/UPS (10%)₹5,664₹5,664₹5,664₹5,664
Health scheme (sample)₹450₹450₹450₹450
In-hand salary₹66,906₹63,366₹60,486₹56,946

So the RRB JE salary per month at entry level lands between roughly ₹57,000 and ₹67,000 in hand, depending on where you are posted.

A Worked Example: JE Posted in Delhi

Let us walk through the X-city column step by step.

  1. Basic pay: ₹35,400
  2. DA at 60%: 35,400 × 0.60 = ₹21,240
  3. HRA at 30%: 35,400 × 0.30 = ₹10,620
  4. TA: (3,600 + 60% DA) = ₹5,760
  5. Gross: 35,400 + 21,240 + 10,620 + 5,760 = ₹73,020
  6. NPS/UPS: 10% of (35,400 + 21,240) = ₹5,664
  7. Health scheme (sample): ₹450
  8. In-hand: 73,020 − 5,664 − 450 = ₹66,906

How the Salary Grows: Pay Steps in an X City

The table below shows how gross and in-hand pay change as a JE moves through the first twelve cells of Level 6. It assumes an X-class, higher-TPTA posting and a 60% DA.

Year (cell)Basic payGross salaryIn-hand salary
1₹35,400₹73,020₹66,906
2₹36,500₹75,110₹68,820
3₹37,600₹77,200₹70,734
4₹38,700₹79,290₹72,648
5₹39,900₹81,570₹74,736
6₹41,100₹83,850₹76,824
7₹42,300₹86,130₹78,912
8₹43,600₹88,600₹81,174
9₹44,900₹91,070₹83,436
10₹46,200₹93,540₹85,698
11₹47,600₹96,200₹88,134
12₹49,000₹98,860₹90,570

For comparison, a JE in a Z-class town with ordinary TPTA would take home about ₹56,946 in year one, ₹65,724 in year six and ₹77,890 in year twelve. These figures do not include promotions, which move you to a higher level and raise pay further.

What Happens When DA Goes Up?

DA changes twice a year, and every revision flows through to TA and the NPS deduction too. Here is how the entry-level X-city salary shifts at different DA rates:

DA rateDA amountGross salaryIn-hand salary
58% (previous)₹20,532₹72,240₹66,197
60% (current in this guide)₹21,240₹73,020₹66,906
63% (illustrative only)₹22,302₹74,190₹67,970

The 63% row is an example of what a 3-point rise would do, not an announced rate.

Will You Pay Income Tax on an RRB JE Salary?

For most JEs, no. Even at the top of the table above, annual gross is under ₹12 lakh, and after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, taxable income stays within the limit where the Section 87A rebate under the new regime wipes out the tax. The Budget 2026-27 coverage I found reports that this limit continues unchanged. Tax rules can change, and extra income can shift the picture, so confirm with the Income Tax Department or a tax professional.

What About the 8th Pay Commission?

The government approved the Terms of Reference for the 8th Pay Commission on 3 November 2025, and the panel has about 18 months to submit its report. A minister has said there is no fixed date for when new pay will apply, so the numbers in this guide stay in force until a revision is formally implemented.

Other Things That Can Change Your Pay Slip

The tables above cover the standard pieces. Your real slip can look different because of:

  • Posting-specific allowances, such as night duty or other duty-linked payments
  • Group insurance and other recoveries that differ across zones
  • Arrears that arrive after a DA revision
  • Training-period pay, which can differ from regular pay

Treat the figures here as a close estimate, and check your appointment letter or first pay slip for the exact breakdown.
